5 Benefits of Summer Camp for Kids

July 21, 2019

It’s that time of the year – classes are over and your child is excited to spend the next few weeks not worrying about homework. They have so many plans in mind – endless TV, watching their favorite movies, playing video games, and spending a lot of time with friends. You’re probably worried that your child will spend the whole summer lounging in front of a screen. To keep your worries at bay, why not consider enrolling them in a summer camp? A summer camp offers numerous benefits to kids. It is a great experience for your child. Plus, they get to spend quality time with old and new friends in a new environment. They will also learn new skills along the way, which can have a positive impact on their overall growth.

There are two kinds of summer camps organized by various organizations. One is a day camp where kids get to enjoy a whole day or a few hours of educational activities and get to go home at the end of the day. Residential camps are normally organized for older kids. They go and spend the whole duration of the camp at an assigned location. Depending on your child’s interests, you can enroll them in a sports camp, music camp, art camp, or science camp.

Here is a list of summer camp benefits and why you should consider enrolling your child in one.

Life skills are acquired

Camps teach children life’s valuable lessons. In school, students are taught various skills but they still lack some knowledge to help them be successful in life. Skills such as leadership, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and socialization can all be learned at camp. These are skills necessary to help excel in life.

At camp, everyone is taught how to communicate well with others. The kids work as a team to achieve a common goal. They can also have a chance to be a leader, whether guiding first-time campers or managing their team for camp games. Camps also help them become better problem solvers as they navigate on their own and learn how to be independent. There are also many activities at camp where they can explore their creativity.

 Improve social skills

Summer camps are the best period when kids can work on their social skills. They get to meet new friends and work collectively as a team. Their language skills are also enhanced as they have the opportunity to strike up a conversation with their fellow campers or the organizers. Games at camp and group activities are also great for teaching kids the value of cooperation, teamwork, and healthy competition.

Exposure to new ideas

One of the many benefits of summer camp is that it gives an opportunity for kids to be exposed to new adventures and information. Kids are able to explore new things in a new environment. They are able to acquire new knowledge and learn skills in areas they are not familiar with. Camps like those science-based ones let kids experiment and learn through hands-on training and discovery. Agriculture and animal care are often taught at farm camps. These are just some of the new things that kids are able to explore in a camp environment.

A chance to reinvent themselves

In school, kids are often acquainted with the same group of people. They go to school year after year with the same students. Most often, kids are stuck with a particular perception. They could be known as a snob, quiet, or studious in school, when they are actually totally different in another setting. Camps give kids a chance to meet different types of people from a different environment. This allows kids to break out of their comfort zone and from the typical categorization they normally have in school.  They can reinvent themselves and become the person they truly want to be. This will help them gain confidence and believe in themselves.

Gain independence

Having your child attend a camp instills a sense of confidence and independence in them. Time spent away from their parents will force them to make decisions on their own – whether good or bad. They will have to learn how to be self-sufficient since there will be no one to remind them to brush their teeth or wake up at a specific time. Even with counselors at the camp, kids do most things independently. While these tasks may be simple, this will help your child learn a great sense of responsibility and confidence.

The benefits of summer camp are endless. It is not simply a summer getaway to keep your child busy or to give yourself some free time. The benefits summer camp offers are something your child will cherish forever, and they will have you to thank for giving them the chance to learn valuable lessons in life.
