Whether our kids experience typical bumps, bruises, sickness, or infection, one of our top priorities as parents is keeping our children safe and protected. Their health and well-being are of utmost importance so that they can enjoy a good quality of life. However, we can’t always keep our kids from getting sick. They are exposed to a wide array of germs and viruses every day, and that’s something over which we don’t have control. What we can do, however, is take steps that can help increase our children’s immunity. So, how do you boost your child’s immune system?

Strengthening our kids’ immune systems can significantly help their little bodies battle colds, coughs, and other illnesses and diseases. Give your child a healthy start by following these tips!

Encourage healthy food choices

Poor nutrition is one of the primary reasons many children get sick easily. Poor nutrition isn’t just about the quantity of food we eat. It’s also about being mindful of eating more healthy foods and less unhealthy foods. When kids ingest excessive amounts of sugar, preservatives, and additives, this can compromise their immune systems. What will help strengthen their immunity against germs are foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, like fruits and vegetables.

Since you, as the parent, are in charge of what is being served, be sure to incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your family’s meals. If you have a picky eater, there are creative ways to serve fruits and vegetables to your child. 

Prioritize sleep

Sleep is significantly important when it comes to a child’s healthy growth and development. Adequate sleep also plays a big role in strengthening our immune systems. Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, can cause kids to be more susceptible to illness.

It isn’t always easy to get kids to bed on time, especially if they are surrounded by too many distractions. However, it’s important that parents enforce and follow a consistent bedtime routine. Discourage the use of all electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime. Incorporate activities that will help put your child in the mood for sleeping, such as reading bedtime stories. 

Get your child moving

Another important tip to help boost your child’s immune system is to encourage sufficient physical activity. Many kids tend to spend a lot of time indoors, glued to tv screens and electronic devices. They may not spend adequate time outdoors running around and having fun. This is where parents need to step in and ensure children are getting enough physical activity on a regular basis.

Exercise and physical activities are just as important for kids as they are for adults. Whether your family likes to work out together or your little one to go outside to play, bike, or run, it’s imperative that we make exercise a priority in our home.

Develop healthy habits

Our susceptibility to illnesses largely depends on our personal hygiene and habits. Help protect your child from germs and viruses by helping them develop healthy habits, such as proper handwashing. Make sure they wash their hands with soap often, especially before and after mealtimes. Children also need to get in the habit of washing their hands after playing outside, blowing their noses, handling pets and other animals, or as soon as they get home from school. 

Good hygiene habits can’t guarantee that your child will never get sick, but they will reduce the amount of germs and viruses that their immune systems will need to fight off. 

Don’t forget about mental and emotional health

Like adults, children suffer from stress and anxiety from time to time too. They also face negative feelings and emotions occasionally, which can be detrimental to their immune systems. Help strengthen your child’s immune system by cultivating a positive atmosphere at home. Nurture a loving and positive relationship with your child, and create the kind of home where love and happiness abound. Carve out adequate time to connect and bond with your family. Make sure your little one feels your affection and encouragement whenever possible.  

Don’t skip immunizations

Your child’s vaccinations are an important part of boosting his or her immunity. Be sure not to skip children’s immunizations, and follow the vaccine schedule, as per your pediatrician’s advice. Vaccines begin as soon as your child is born and continue into adulthood to help prevent infections and diseases like mumps, measles, chickenpox, and others.
